Firebase Studio was Google's cloud-based agentic IDE launched April 2025 (preview), unifying Project IDX with Firebase services and Gemini AI. It achieved 1.5 million workspaces within roughly a month of launch. PRODUCT IS BEING DISCONTINUED: sunset announced March 19, 2026, with full shutdown March 22, 2027. Google has consolidated into a single successor stack — AI Studio 2.0 (browser-based prototyping with Firebase integration) plus Antigravity 2.0 (local-first agentic IDE) — unveiled at Google I/O 2026. Firebase Studio never reached GA status.
Adoption & Proof Points
- 1.5 million workspaces created within ~1 month of launch (by May 2025). No Fortune 500 deployments documented. Independent 2026 reviews describe it as fast for prototyping but still 'very much in beta' — generated apps require developer cleanup to fix errors and wire up Auth/Firestore/Functions before production. Documented reliability issues persist into 2026: workspace stuck on 'Setting up workspace', 403/404/502 console errors, publish-button failures (workaround via App Hosting CLI), and CORS/Genkit model errors after the Gemini 2.0→2.5 upgrade. Developer-community reaction to the sunset is markedly negative ('Google graveyard' trust deficit), with users actively evaluating Replit, Lovable, and Bolt.new as replacements.
Risks & Limitations
- PRODUCT SUNSET: Shutdown March 22, 2027 (remaining data permanently deleted); new workspaces disabled June 22, 2026. Never reached GA. No SLA or deprecation policy. Migration paths: AI Studio 2.0 (browser, Firebase-integrated) or Antigravity 2.0 (local IDE), with a studio:export command to port projects. Core Firebase services (Firestore, Auth, Hosting) are NOT affected and apps already deployed keep running. Enterprise users face forced migration with no feature-parity guarantee. Zero offline capability; cloud-only. Open VSX Registry only. Internal competition from Antigravity was resolved by sunsetting this product. This is a MANAGED wind-down (transitional model/tooling updates still shipping), not a hard freeze — but there is no long-term roadmap.
Capabilities & Integration
Three agent modes with graduated autonomy: Ask Mode (conversation only), Agent Mode (proposes changes requiring approval), Agent Auto-run Mode (autonomous multi-file generation — codes across files, writes tests, fixes errors, refactors from a single prompt; always asks before deleting files or running terminal commands). App Prototyping agent accepts natural language, images, UI mockups, and Figma designs (Builder.io plugin). Gemini default with Gemini 3.0 Flash/Pro Preview now selectable; max output tokens raised to 32,768. MCP integration with Firebase MCP Server (30+ tools, stdio/SSE/HTTP transports). Project-level rule files (GEMINI.md, .idx/airules.md, .cursorrules) honored. WIND-DOWN: only transitional updates expected; no feature roadmap beyond migration support.
